Vision Group reaches out to Buziga HIV/AIDS orphans school
July 2011
St. Maria Gorretti primary school Buziga was the venue for a fan filled and large-hearted school painting exercise last weekend involving Vision Group staff and a couple of other volunteers.
The exercise, part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drive was well attended and well executed, resonating with Vision group’s commitment to reach out to society through generous activities as these.
Led by Susan Nsibirwa, the group’s head of marketing, the Vision team put a fresh coat of paint on the school whose grey, cream and white shades had clearly begun disappearing under a less- faltering coat of dust and old age. The team comprising staff from the editorial, finance, advertising, production, legal and other Vision departments and clad in brownish Vision T-shirts got down to business very fast and rolled a fresh coat of cream and grey paint to all school buildings-from the dormitory, classrooms, administration block and kitchen.
It was a meticulously done exercise that the youthful volunteers of the Kibo Foundation- an ICT training centre joined in to lend a hand. Within about three hours, the HIV orphans school was breathing a new fresh breath. Students and teachers alike jumped in jubilation as they thanked Vision Group and Kibo foundation for a job well done. On behalf of Vision Group, Nsibirwa thanked St. Maria Gorretti primary school for offering the company an opportunity to help in a “small way”. She also thanked Kibo Foundation for their cooperation and assistance in the exercise. She said that Vision Group is committed to giving back to the society ‘that has always supported us’. “We hope that what we have done today will help to encourage pupils and their teachers in their struggle. We would also like you to know that we share in your struggles,” she said.
Jovita Ajuna, the TOTO Magazine editor handed over copies of the popular children’s magazine to the eager students as well as fliers and a TOTO poster. The students also received copies of Pass PLE papers published by the New Vision. “This is for you to read, to improve your reading skills and to enjoy during your free time, be well, Vision Group loves you,” said Ajuna as she handed over the reading materials.
Teachers and students alike were very excited and expressed gratitude at Vision Group’s generosity. Joanita Ssali, the head teacher said: “We are indeed indebted to Vision Group for putting us back on track. We assure you today that with your support we are going to excel, we are going to work hard to be among the top schools in this community and the whole country,” she said amid applause. She called upon the New Vision “to come and cover us when we excel in the upcoming national examinations.” Patience Nakato, a Primary two pupil at the school said she was very happy about the gifts. “We are going to pass very well,” she said.
St. Maria Gorretti primary school Buziga was founded in 1990. It is a Christian founded mixed school that caters for HIV/AIDS orphans. According to the head teacher, the school currently has an enrolment of 98 pupils from Primary One to Primary Seven.
