Vision group extends career guidance to the community
Fun, group discussions and one- on- one talk coupled with practical activities characterized a career guidance session conducted by Vision Group at KIBO Foundation in Kansanga last week.
This was part of Vision Group’s corporate social responsibility aimed at giving back to the community and getting involved in matters that advance the society.
The career talk is part of an intervention organized by Vision Group in response to the need of career guidance in the country. Lack of career guidance has been cited as one of the major challenges that beset Ugandan education system. The problem has been attributed curriculum overload and high teacher – student ratio that leaves teachers with no room to guide students. Ugandan education system has also been criticized for being exam based with little room for job creation skills.
With a population of over 30 million and close to 30 universities, Uganda has become extremely competitive in both education placement and the job market. In the face of cut-throat competition for government sponsorship in higher institutions of learning, many students end up making wrong career choices. The incentive of state sponsorship has also pushed students to courses for which they have neither ability nor interest.
In accordance to its strategy of advancing the society and in line with its social responsibility, Vision Group has partnered with KIBO Foundation. KIBO is a Canadian charity that trains students on foundational ICT skills and skills related to community development and entrepreneurship.
The career session which was attended by 75 KIBO Foundation students was conducted by the Newspapers in Education Manager, Jamesa Wagwau.
Making a presentation on the theme, ‘opening doors of opportunity’ Jamesa challenged the youth to build professional supportive network that would propel their career to the next level. This was the second session in the career support series provided by Vision Group to KIBO Foundation.
The career sessions that are scheduled to run throughout the year also reflect the value Vision Group attaches to education. Every week, New Vision runs a special supplement, Mwalimu that addresses education issues affecting stakeholders like children, parents, teachers and policy makers.
We exist and engage in activities for more than financial gain, the society has to benefit. As a company, we strive to improve the country’s economic development and the quality of life,’ says Vision Group’s legal officer, Doreen Awanga.
The KIBO Foundation’s training coordinator, Patricia Otoa said Vision – KIBO partnership was destined to make a big difference in giving students the self-reliance skills they needed for the competitive job market.

Vision Group HR gives career guidance tips:
Vision Group Chief Human Resource Officer Kathy has held a talk at KiBO Foundation centered on the job application process. The students wanted tips on what kind of things they can do to improve their chances of getting jobs through applications.
She highlighted the following tips to the students:
• While still in school/ college, they need to ensure that they get excellent grades and are involved in extra-curricular activities. This is important because for entry- level jobs, this is the criteria that is used to shortlist.
• The students were encouraged to identify mentors in their fields of interest, whom they can use a credible references on their applications. I told them that they should spend as much time as possible with these mentors so that they gain as they can from them.
• Highlighted too was the importance of them applying for jobs which were a good match for their skills so that they do not get disappointed by applying for jobs that they have little chance of getting. Students were cautioned to check the qualifications and experience required for a job opening.
• She talked about ensuring that submitted applications are ‘clean,’ implying that they should ensure that there are no spelling errors in the submitted documents, the photocopies of academic transcripts are clean and that handwritings are legible
• For the actual interview, she spoke about presentation, including what to wear, ensuring that they are clean and are smelling fresh!
• A session was held about commonly asked questions and she gave the stuudents guidelines on how to answer them.
In her own words, "It was a blast!"
